Often, it seems so harmless that parents and educators don’t realize the long-term effects. But the fact is, the earlier children are exposed, the more likely they are to develop a gambling problem by the time they’re in their teens. Here’s what you need to know to help keep kids from developing dangerous habits.

Danger ahead

Here are the warning signs a child could be at risk.

  • Misses school with no explanation.
  • Grades suddenly drop; assignments are missing.
  • Disinterest in other activities.
  • Behavior becomes secretive, defensive, or aggressive.
  • Increased interest in money and value of possessions.
  • Speaks openly about gambling or borrowing money.

6.5% of individuals ages 14 to 21 are at risk for problem gambling.

10%-14%of youth ages 12 to 17 are at risk for problem gambling.
